As it is the start of the new year, I thought it time to publish this.
We all remember the Poem about the months that we learned in our English schools. It starts “January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow …”
We live in the Southern Hemisphere, so when it came time to do our show about Time and Space, I decided to write a poem about our Months here in Durban.
SOUTH AFRICA’S MONTHS
In hot January, the year’s just begun.
February is Summer, we swim and have fun.
In March it is hottest, but coming our way
Is April with Autumn and Easter day.
In May are the loveliest days of the year.
It’s June, and the running of “Comrades” is here.
It’s cold in July, Winter clothes we must wear.
In August some branches of trees are all bare.
The first of September’s the first day of Spring,
When October’s Jacarandas are all blossoming.
November has days that are rainy and long.
In December, it’s Christmas and a whole year has gone

Matriarch Music – The Art of Education Theme Programme – Time and Space
Devised for ages 3-9 yrs old.
The photo shows a moment from our Time and Space show at a school on
19th October 2010.
I have to make special mention of the fact that John devised and made all the props for our 30 Theme Programmes.
* Comrades is a Marathon run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg every year, one year up, one year down. 90km / 56 miles. It started out as a War memorial run, and now has over 12,000 runners each year.
Author Bio:
Singer / Songwriter Miriam was born in Lewes, Sussex in 1948, and has a lifetime of making music.
From 1993-7 she was “Miriam Backhouse. The First Lady of Folk”.
She still tours Europe with her own songs and traditional ones.
In 1977 she married John Erasmus and moved to South Africa.
They raised a family as “Mim and John” playing music for all ages, but mostly touring the local Schools from 1987 to 2018.
She wrote 300 Educational songs and poems for children.
Now a journalist, she writes of life in South Africa and her travels.
