By Heather Flood
The saying “You’re never too old’ has been proved to be correct by my husband and fellow Eastbourne author Tony Flood, who has another string to his bow – playing veterans football.
And on Sunday he scored a hat-trick – not bad for an 82-year-old!
Tony, the author of celebrity book My Life With The Stars and crime thrillers Triple Tease, Stitch Up and Fall Guy, says: “I would like to thank my much younger footballing team-mates at Sovereign Harbour Veterans for providing the passes.
“The first goal was a penalty, the second a back heel flick as the ball came to me at speed, would you believe, and the third from a lovely cross I received.
“But the time is approaching for me to hang up my boots. The highlight of my footballing career was playing with the legendary George Best in a testimonial match for Charlton’s Derek Hales. The Charlton joint manager Steve Gritt said in the club programme afterwards: “My lasting memory is of journalist Tony Flood. Everywhere George Best went so Tony Flood went – the only problem was they were on the same team!” That’s how in awe of Bestie I was – as were some infatuated ladies, including Barbara Windsor, who I talk about in my celebrity book.
“I intend to retire at Christmas because I am by far the oldest and slowest member at the club – meanwhile, please keep the passes coming lads – and make an old man very happy before he concentrates on writing.”
