I’m Just Taking It Easy

By Miriam Erasmus

Granny, where are you going ?
Oh, nowhere special, dear.
I thought perhaps I’d take a stroll
Round the garden to watch it grow.
Maybe pull a weed here and there,
Or sit and think on the swinging chair.
Listen to the birds or smell the flowers.
I’m just taking it easy.

Granny, what are you doing ?
Oh, nothing much, my dear.
I’ve a bag of wool and some patterns
To knit something – what, doesn’t matter.
There’s some sewing in the basket,
Some jewels and sequins in the casket.
Needles and threads of all different sizes.
I’m just taking it easy.

Granny, what are you thinking ?
Oh, nothing in particular, dear.
Thoughts flash through my mind
Like butterflies on the wind.
Sometimes I dream of gentler days.
Of meadows sweet in the Summer haze.
Or holidays by the shining sea,
Or when we built a house in the tree.
Thinking can be sad, sometimes, but –
I’m just taking it easy.

Granny, why did you leave us ?
Oh, I had no choice, my dear.
I’ll come with you as you take a stroll
Round the garden to watch it grow.
You can have the sewing in the basket,
The jewels and sequins in the casket.
We’ll dream together of gentled hours.
I’m always with you, but, just for now –
I’m just taking it easy.
