His Lordship

By Miriam Erasmus

He stands at the park gate whilst Bill turns the lock
He sniffs at the morning air.
Heโ€™s been here before – yes, the smellโ€™s still the same
Funny, but itโ€™s alway there.

A quick toddle up to the nearest park bench.
Time for a closer inspection.
The paintโ€™s a bit chipped but his Lordship donโ€™t mind,ย
The wearโ€™s too small for detection.

A look round the gardens, more sniffs at the flowers.
Why, everythingโ€™s blooming so gaily.
He knows every path and each flower on the way.ย
He ought to, he comes here twice daily.

The park soon fills up with young people at play.
He smiles at their joy and their laughter.
He remembers the time when he, too, was young,
And the hours heโ€™s spent here thereafter.

As evening draws on and the mist starts to fall,
He tiptoes his way through the fog.
He doesnโ€™t need guidance, he knows the way by heart.
Heโ€™s the park keeperโ€™s faithful old dog.
