Posture

By Miriam Erasmus

My shoulders are sagging
My head weighs a ton.
I feel like Iโ€™m sinking,ย
I feel like Iโ€™m done!

The effort of walking
Is more like a shuffle,
And I talk to myself
Through some kind of muffle.

Steady as I go now,
My eyes on the floor.
Scared stiff of tripping
As I have done before.

I canโ€™t really tell you
What things weighs me down.
Iโ€™ll tell you itโ€™s nothing
To bring me a frown.

Yet time after time
I can hear myself say,
โ€œCome on, lass – Posture!!โ€
Many times a day.ย

Then my shoulders go back
And my backside tucks in.
Iโ€™m ready for the world now
I say, with a grin.

Got to have a giggle
And know, with a sigh,
I can walk to tomorrow
With my head held high.
